The Any-Occasion Shirt

My last post championed bold colour choices.  Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t believe men should ‘go big or go home’ on a daily basis. Classics are classics for a reason, and I severely doubt that the classic white shirt will ever go out of fashion, not if Quentin Tarantino has anything to do with it.

Arguably one of my top five directors and screenwriters, Tarantino’s movies are amongst the most shrewdly stylized films out there, and could believably be marketed as fashion films, albeit rather violent and chaotic. Who doesn’t think of Reservoir Dogs when they think of the staple black and white suit? It’s like Pavlov’s dog, except instead of a bell stimulating salivation, the very mention of a suit and tie invokes images of gun slaughter and involuntary lip-synching to ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’.  Those three button jackets with those uber thin lapels? – If you’re slim built, maybe a bit on the lanky side? Give this narrow silhouette a go, and then send us a photo ‘cos boy, does the world need more of that dapper bad boy aesthetic.  The perfect white shirt, coupled with the perfect look? Well, to borrow some words from the great Tarantino, ‘Gentlemen, you had my curiosity. But now you have my attention’.

"Fa…fa…fa…fa…fashion!”

There’s a linen fabric showcased on the J.J. website, suitably titled ‘Lemon’, that immediately triggered less personal, but just as vivid images in my mind’s eye.  You know that two-piece mustard suit David Bowie wore? That double-breasted number with the complimentary turnups, and the exaggerated cuffs and shoulders – you know the one I’m talking about? No? Well, you should, as his androgynous style has been glorified for over four decades, and has inspired both menswear as well as womenswear.  His long adored zoot suits recently made the rounds of various fashion weeks across the world, to much critical acclaim. These loud suits, as well as his penchant for the plain white shirt, are plainly exemplified in his chameleonic persona the Thin White Duke, but examples of the true audaciousness of his fashion choices are to be found in his arguably most famous persona, Ziggy Stardust.

Hello, hello, hello, fellow Threadheads!

Before reading the following blog post (my first of possibly many, or none at all – depending on my audience) I beseech you to have some patience when devouring my often lengthily and slightly meandering posts.  I, unfortunately, am an ex-literature student and am still desperately trying to shake off all those literary  pretentions and affectations that had been forced upon me (under duress, I assure you) over much of my scholarly career. So, please, dear J.J. readers, forgive those inevitable transgressions into the poetic (trust me, I hate myself for them more than all you critics combined!), and I hope my posts offer you some form of respite from your busy lives, whether you’re laughing with me, or at me.

Men's formalwear is a uniform for important and festive occasions that has a long and rich history. Today, extremely formal occasions are not as commonplace, and many people can get away with a suit and tie as their highest level of formality, but what happens when you receive an invitation that lists a specific type of dress? Wearing the wrong type of formalwear can not only make you look unsophisticated and out of place, but it could even be offensive to the host of the event.

We've broken down the most common types of men's formalwear into their basic parts to give you an idea of how to dress for any type of event or situation.
